BART LUYTEN PIGEONS

HOW IT ALL STARTED:

An older friend had pigeons. He left early in the morning and often came home late. I was still at school and had some time before classes to let the pigeons out, call them back in, and feed them. After school, I followed the same routine. The man would help out, and I definitely got "infected" by the pigeon racing bug. The results were not always what I hoped for, but the pleasure of seeing a pigeon return home was always there.

BUILDING THE BLOODLINE:

Later on, I started keeping pigeons independently and taking part in races, all from my current address. In my search for good pigeons - better pigeons - I placed my trust in pigeons from Hok Van den Bruel (Itegem) and Beute-Hansen (Wilhelminaoord, the Netherlands).

I have also had very good results with pigeons from Robert Smeulders (Bekkevoort); every year he rings about 10 young pigeons for me, which I can then race.

SYSTEM:

The national races between 400 and 700 km are the most important for us. We try to send all our pigeons to the same race so that we do not spend the entire weekend occupied only with pigeons and travelling to the clubs. We aim to do this with a limited number of pigeons.

The old hens normally take part weekly in middle-distance races; since there are only a few of them, they will compete among the young pigeons.

The young pigeons are kept together from the moment they are separated, with the aim that all of them participate in national young bird races using the “sliding-door system”. Once the season officially starts, they are taken twice a week to a point 40 km from home and released together. On the other days, they train at home.

EXTRA:

What I enjoy most about this sport is the feeling when a pigeon has given everything in a hard race and returns home. I also really appreciate the sense of camaraderie and the conversations about pigeons with fellow fanciers.
